A disagreement between two teenage friends working at Ramat Park in Benin City turned deadly on Wednesday after one of them, identified as Prosper, allegedly stabbed the other, Osamede Osagbovo, during a fight over N2,000.
Both boys, aged about 14, worked daily at the busy park helping motorists load passengers and luggage for small payments. They had just completed a task that earned them N2,000 when an argument erupted over how to share the money.
Witnesses said Prosper insisted he deserved a larger portion, claiming he had done most of the work. Osamede disagreed, demanding an equal split. The disagreement quickly escalated into shouting.
Several onlookers tried to calm them, but the tension only grew worse. The boys reportedly pushed each other as the argument turned physical.
In the heat of the fight, Prosper was said to have run to a nearby spot, grabbed a bottle and struck Osamede with it, stabbing him in the process. The attack left the victim bleeding heavily.
Bystanders said Osamede collapsed almost immediately. Despite frantic attempts to get help, he died at the scene before medical assistance could arrive.
The shocking incident caused panic among traders and commuters at the park, many of whom described the fight as something that “should never have turned violent.”
Operatives of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC), who were on routine patrol, arrived shortly after and quickly apprehended the suspect to prevent him from fleeing.
Confirming the arrest, the Deputy Commander of the Corps, Richard Balogun, said the suspect was immediately transferred to the police for proper investigation and prosecution.
He described the killing as “deeply unfortunate,” noting that more minors are becoming involved in risky work and violent confrontations at motor parks.
Meanwhile, residents of the area have called for stronger child protection and rehabilitation programmes to curb the rising involvement of teenagers in touting and street violence.
