The Delta State Police Command on Tuesday held a 5km Walkathon in Asaba to commemorate 70 years of women serving in the Nigeria Police Force and to intensify advocacy against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
The event, which formed part of a nationwide celebration, was led by senior female officers of the Command and attracted women police personnel from divisions across the state.
They were joined by male officers, civil society partners, and members of the public who marched in solidarity with survivors of GBV and in recognition of the historic role of women in policing since 1955.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, praised female officers for their courage, professionalism, and growing contributions to national security.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to strengthening gender-responsive policing and improving support structures for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other gender-based offences.
According to him, the 70-year milestone highlights a legacy of resilience and leadership demonstrated by women who have shaped policing in Nigeria over the decades.
The CP urged residents of the state to speak up, report cases promptly, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies in the fight against GBV.
He stressed that tackling violence against women and vulnerable persons remains a top operational priority for the Command.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the Command will continue to deepen collaborations with stakeholders and community groups to eliminate all forms of gender-based abuse.
Residents were encouraged to report incidents to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency hotline: 08036684974.
The Delta State Police Command assured the public of its unwavering commitment to building a safer and more inclusive society for all.
