Former UK Doctor Charged with 45 Sexual Assault and Penetration Offences Involving 38 Patients

A former practising doctor in the West Midlands, Nathaniel John Spencer (38), has been charged with a total of 45 serious sexual offences involving 38 patients while working at major hospitals. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed the charges following a “detailed and complex investigation” by Staffordshire Police.

The charges against Spencer, who resides in Quinton, Birmingham, include 15 counts of sexual assault, 17 counts of assault by penetration, nine counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, three counts of assault by penetration of a child under 13, and one count of attempted assault by penetration. The alleged offences took place between 2017 and 2021.

The investigation by the Public Protection Unit focused on incidents that occurred while Spencer worked at two major institutions: Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent and Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley. Spencer was a former resident doctor—previously known as a junior doctor—at the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust from August 2017 to August 2020. He subsequently worked at The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust from August 2020 to April 2021.

Both affected NHS trusts have issued statements and established dedicated helplines for concerned patients. Dr Paul Hudson, the Dudley Group’s operational medical director, commented: “We understand that many of our patients, staff, and people in the wider community will find this news very distressing,” adding that the trust has cooperated fully with the police. The UHNM also stressed that “the safety and well-being of our patients and their relatives are our highest priority.”

The General Medical Council (GMC) confirmed that it has taken action to suspend Mr. Spencer from medical practice in the UK, a suspension that will remain in place while the criminal proceedings and the GMC’s own fitness-to-practise investigation continue.

Mr. Spencer is scheduled to make his first appearance at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre on 20 January 2026.
