Delta Police Arrest Security Guard, Accomplice Over Murder of Retired High Court Judge

By Peter Onyekachukwu

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a security guard and one of his alleged accomplices in connection with the gruesome killing of a retired judge of the Delta State High Court, Justice Ifeoma Okogwu.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that the arrests followed a coordinated intelligence-led operation.

According to Edafe, operatives of the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department apprehended the primary suspect, 25-year-old Godwin Mngumi, in Anambra State on December 6.

Mngumi, who worked as the night security guard at the judge’s residence, was found with the deceased’s mobile phone and reportedly confessed to playing a key role in the attack.

He allegedly told investigators that he invited his friend, Nnaji Obalum, along with a third suspect still at large, to the residence where Justice Okogwu was violently murdered on November 23.

Police sources said Obalum has also been arrested, while efforts have intensified to track down the fleeing third suspect believed to have participated in the crime.

Justice Okogwu, an Asaba-born former judicial officer, was discovered dead in her home situated behind The Pointer Newspaper office in Asaba, sparking widespread shock and fear in the state capital.

Findings indicated that the assailants bound her hands and legs before ransacking the entire house, fueling suspicions of a planned, targeted operation.

Family members said the disappearance of the night security guard immediately after the incident raised early suspicions. The victim’s brother, Ogbueshi Okogwu, disclosed that the morning guard who reported for duty met the gate open and offered no clear explanation for his actions.

He added that the family provided full details of the private security company that deployed the guards, prompting police to detain the morning guard and invite the firm’s owner for questioning as investigations continue.
