ABUJA, NIGERIA – The factional Board of Trustees (BoT) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has unveiled a major internal restructuring plan aimed at reorganizing troubled state chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and paving the way for fresh congresses and a national convention.
Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Chairman of the factional BoT, disclosed the strategy yesterday at the board’s meeting held at the official residence of the FCT Minister in Life Camp, Abuja. He emphasized the group’s commitment to rebuilding the PDP from within and restoring crucial public confidence in its internal
Senator Ohuabunwa reported that the faction is already making significant progress in reorganizing affected state chapters, which includes the constitution of credible caretaker committees. He explained that this initiative is designed to “prepare the ground for transparent congresses and subsequent convention process.”
The reforms, he insisted, are necessary to “build trust, strengthen internal structures and ensure that our party remains a model of fairness and inclusiveness in the Nigerian democratic space.”
Declaring full support for the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Working Committee (NWC), Ohuabunwa stressed, “We are going to work with this NWC, we are going to encourage them, we are going to support them to ensure that the right things are done, and that things will be done in line with the law and the guidance of our great party.”
Ohuabunwa stressed the necessity for the BoT to reclaim its statutory role in stabilizing the PDP. He noted that as the “conscience of the party” and its “moral compass,” the Board must provide stability, wisdom, and moral guidance.
He added that the BoT’s core responsibility is to “safeguard the party’s soul, steer it away from divisive tendencies, and reinforce the values that have historically set the PDP apart as a disciplined and democratically established institution.”
The Chairman urged members to prioritize unity as they push through the restructuring agenda and warned that the board must strictly uphold legality and due process, ensuring obedience to the laws of the Federation, the laws of the party, and the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Ohuabunwa reaffirmed the faction’s determination to ensure that the PDP emerges stronger, more virile, and fully prepared for future leadership responsibilities following the comprehensive reforms. The meeting saw the attendance of several key chieftains, including the factional National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, and former Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Dr. Philip Salary.
