The Rivers State House of Assembly has confirmed that impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, are actively underway, following the formal service of notices of allegations on both officials.
The Assembly, presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, initiated the impeachment process on Thursday, citing eight allegations of gross misconduct against the governor and deputy governor.
Amid reports on social media suggesting that the process had been suspended, the lawmakers on Friday moved to clarify that the proceedings remain intact and are progressing in line with constitutional provisions.
Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Dr. Enemi Alabo George, said the notices had been duly transmitted to the affected officials and that the House was awaiting their responses as stipulated under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
According to him, the legislature has the constitutional mandate to investigate and check alleged infractions by the executive, stressing that the Assembly would not abandon its responsibilities.
George faulted claims that the impeachment notice had been withdrawn, describing them as deliberate attempts to mislead the public and undermine the authority of the legislature.
He urged Rivers residents to ignore what he termed false narratives, assuring that the House remained focused on its duties despite pressure, threats or misinformation.
The lawmaker also expressed appreciation to stakeholders and citizens for their support, reiterating the Assembly’s commitment to democracy and constitutional governance in the state.
