AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Fall to Morocco on Penalties, Set for Third-Place Playoff

By Peter Onyekachukwu

Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Wednesday bowed out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after losing 4–2 on penalties to host nation Morocco in a tense semi-final clash at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

The highly anticipated encounter ended goalless after 90 minutes and extra time, with both sides cancelling each other out before Morocco held their nerve in the shootout to book a place in the final.

Morocco dominated large spells of the game, registering 16 shots against Nigeria’s two, but found it difficult to break down a resilient Super Eagles defence inspired by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Nwabali made several crucial saves to keep Nigeria in contention, while Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, was equally impressive, denying the Super Eagles clear chances when they came.

Nigeria’s attacking duo of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman struggled to make a significant impact, as Morocco’s well-organised backline neutralised their threat throughout regulation time and extra time.

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi stood out with a commanding display at right-back, providing width and attacking support, while Noussair Mazraoui was solid on the left, combining defensive discipline with forward runs.

Both full-backs played key roles in maintaining Morocco’s attacking pressure and limiting Nigeria’s options in the final third.

With the victory, Morocco advanced to Sunday’s final where they will face Senegal, as they chase a second AFCON title, their first since lifting the trophy in 1976.

Nigeria, meanwhile, will turn their attention to Saturday’s third-place playoff against Egypt, who were edged 1–0 by Senegal in the other semi-final.
