Sokoto VC Urges Youth to Choose Job-Oriented Courses

By Peter Onyekachukwu

Prospective university students have been advised to prioritise courses that offer practical skills and strong employment prospects, amid rising unemployment among graduates in Nigeria.

The Vice-Chancellor of Northwest University, Sokoto, Professor Mukhtar Umar Bunza, gave the advice during an accreditation visit by the Library Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) to the institution.

Prof. Bunza said many young people still overlook disciplines such as Library and Information Science, despite the wide range of career opportunities available in the field.

“Every profession requires proper training and acceptable standards before one can enter the workforce. Students must pay attention to courses that will properly equip them for today’s job market,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor assured the council that the university’s management and founder were fully committed to implementing all recommendations arising from the exercise to strengthen teaching, learning, and professional standards.

“We are ever ready to take all necessary steps to meet the council’s recommendations,” Bunza added.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Library Registration Council of Nigeria, Jafar Abdullahi Wase, said the accreditation visit was aimed at assessing the university’s programmes and ensuring compliance with professional requirements.

According to him, the exercise focuses on evaluating curriculum content, facilities, staffing, and the general quality of library education in line with the council’s benchmarks.

Wase commended Northwest University for its dedication to producing competent and well-trained library and information professionals.
