Uvwie Monarch Marks 18 Years, Urges Reduction in Airfares, National Reforms

By Peter Onyekachukwu

The Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, Emmanuel Ekemejewa Sideso Abe I, has called for a downward review of airfares and constitutional reforms to promote unity and fairness across Nigeria.

The monarch made the call during activities marking his 18th coronation anniversary at his palace in Effurun, where he also unveiled his book titled Odyssey of Royalty.

Speaking at the event, the royal father appealed to airlines operating in the country to reduce ticket prices, saying the rising cost of air travel was affecting national development.

“I sincerely appeal to airlines operating in the country to consider a downward review of airfares in the best interest of national development,” he said.

He noted that insecurity on highways has made air travel the safer option for many Nigerians but expressed concern that the high cost of tickets has become burdensome.

“With the fearful trend of insecurity in the country, flying is now presumed safer than other means of transport, but the sky-high cost of flying seems even scarier than skydiving,” he said.

The monarch also observed that some citizens now consider paying high airfares preferable to facing security risks on the roads, describing the situation as worrisome and in need of urgent attention.

On national issues, the traditional ruler called for unity and the development of a workable constitution that would ensure justice, equity and a sense of belonging for all Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic or religious background.

“We have come to a point in our national advancement that we must resolve to unite and produce a workable constitution that will give every Nigerian a sense of belonging and pride, guaranteeing justice and fairness. This is crucial and has acquired a sense of urgency,” he said.

He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, describing the country as blessed with natural resources and resilient citizens, and urged leaders to sustain policies that would reposition the nation for sustainable growth.

The anniversary celebration attracted dignitaries from within and outside Delta State, including political leaders, traditional rulers, former public office holders and community stakeholders.

In their goodwill messages, representatives of federal and state governments commended the monarch for promoting peace, stability and cultural preservation in Uvwie Kingdom.

The event also featured cultural displays, underscoring the role of traditional institutions in fostering dialogue, unity and development.
