RIVER: The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has vowed to apprehend the perpetrators of the gruesome murder of Mr. Gibson Reuben, the Managing Director of Rivers State Cassava Project Limited and a Dutch expatriate.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday, January 13, 2025, at the Aleto Eleme Bridge, where unknown gunmen ambushed Reuben’s vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and plunge into the river.

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the attack happened around 8:30 pm, and a search party led by the Command’s Marine Unit was immediately deployed to rescue Reuben and his driver.

The search efforts resulted in the recovery of the lifeless body of Mr. Gibson Reuben and the white Toyota Hilux van used by the victims.

During a visit to the scene, CP Adepoju, accompanied by the Area Commander Eleme, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and tactical teams, condemned the incident as “barbaric and unacceptable” and assured residents that the command would leave no stone unturned in tracking down the attackers.

“This attack is a very disturbing and reprehensible act. We have launched a full-scale investigation and will ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” Adepoju stated.

The commissioner further appealed to Rivers residents to provide credible information that could assist the police in their investigation.

“We urge members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activity. The safety of our people and expatriates is a priority, and we will not rest until those responsible for this heinous act are arrested,” he added.

The incident has sparked concerns over the safety of foreign investors and business owners in Rivers State. Security experts have called for increased patrols and surveillance on highways and riverine areas to prevent such occurrences.

Reacting to the incident, a resident of Aleto Eleme, Mrs. Comfort Boma, said the community is shocked and saddened by the attack. “We want the government and security agencies to act fast. This is not the first time such a thing has happened,” she lamented.

The Rivers State Police Command assured that they are intensifying efforts to restore peace and security across the state while urging citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

The investigation is ongoing.
