DELTA: The Department of State Services (DSS) has called for the recruitment of Nigeria’s brightest graduates into the intelligence sector, emphasizing that effective crime-fighting requires intellect and strategic thinking.
DSS Director-General Oluwatosin Ajayi, represented by Deputy Director Patrick Ikenweiwe, made this appeal during a lecture at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday. Speaking on “The Roles of the DSS in Security, Peacekeeping, and National Integration,” he highlighted the need for a more strategic approach to recruitment and staffing in the agency.
“If I had my way, the best graduates in the country would be compelled to serve the nation through the DSS,” Ikenweiwe stated. “You cannot expect an unintelligent officer to outmaneuver a criminal network filled with highly skilled individuals. Intelligence is key to tracking and dismantling criminal activities.”
He referenced Israel’s education system, where high-achieving students are automatically funneled into national service roles. He suggested a similar model for Nigeria, where academic institutions would provide the DSS with details of outstanding graduates for national security roles.
