DELTA: A civil society group, Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancement (ISRCA), has called on Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and key political representatives to urgently address the 16-year power outage in Delta Steel Company (DSC) Township, Udu Local Government Area.
ISRCA, also known as “No Justice, No Peace,” said in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade (Amb) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, that the prolonged blackout has worsened living conditions in the community, forcing many youths into crime and stifling local businesses.
“This situation should trouble Governor Oborevwori, Hon. Francis Ejiroghene Waive, Hon. Egbetamah Ovie Collins, and Udu Council Chairman, Olorogun Vincent Ogheneruemu Oyibode,” Agberen stated. “The impact of electricity cannot be overstated. It drives industry, sustains small businesses, and enhances livelihoods. The people of DSC Township deserve better.”
The group argued that despite the evolution of DSC Township into a thriving community with designated voting wards, basic infrastructure such as electricity remains a major challenge.
“Restoring power to the area should be a priority of the Delta State Government under Governor Oborevwori. Achieving this would be a significant milestone in his administration, particularly in his second term,” the group stated.
ISRCA also urged the Udu Local Government Chairman to utilize federal allocations to tackle the electricity crisis. It further called on Hon. Karo Goru, the DESOPADEC Commissioner representing Udu, alongside Hon. Waive and Hon. Egbetamah, to prioritize the plight of their constituents.
“We cannot have all these political representatives in Udu, yet the people continue to suffer. The ongoing power blackout is an embarrassment and must be addressed with immediate action,” the statement added.
