AKWA-IBOM; A wave of relief swept through Nung Asang Ikono community in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State as dozens of widows and teenage mothers received food aid and free healthcare under the “Project Hope in Every Meal” (Project HEM) initiative.
The outreach, spearheaded by the Queen Mother’s Empowerment Foundation (QMEF) in collaboration with the Christian Tom Udofia family, sought to tackle hunger and improve the well-being of vulnerable women in the community.
Speaking at the event on Friday, the founder of QMEF, Queen Mother, emphasized that the initiative goes beyond food distribution, saying:
“We are not just giving meals; we are restoring dignity, hope, and resilience to women who struggle daily to feed their families. No mother should have to watch her child go to bed hungry.”
The outreach featured three key components: food distribution, education on gender-based violence, and free HIV testing, conducted by health workers from the Primary Health Centre, Nung Udoe, Ibesikpo Asutan LGA.
One of the beneficiaries, Ekaette John, a widow with three children, expressed gratitude for the support.
“Feeding my children has been a struggle since I lost my husband. This food will go a long way in keeping us going,” she said.
QMEF noted that Project HEM aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 1 (No Poverty), and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
The foundation reaffirmed its commitment to fighting food insecurity, gender-based violence, and poor healthcare access in marginalized communities.
