Journalists Face DSS Detention Over Protest Coverage in Jos

By Peter Onyekachukwu, JOS

JOS: The Department of State Services (DSS) in Plateau State on Tuesday detained and interrogated two reporters from Daily Trust newspaper over their coverage of a peaceful protest by heavy truck drivers in Jos.

The journalists, Ado Abubakar Musa and Dickson Adama, were invited to the DSS office, where Musa was specifically questioned about his report on the protest. A source familiar with the matter revealed that the interrogation revolved around alleged concerns about national security.

“The reporters were held for hours before being allowed to leave,” the source disclosed.

Reacting to the incident, veteran journalist and founder of Safe Press Nigeria, Dan’asabe Muhammad, condemned the DSS action, describing it as an attempt to intimidate the press.

“This is harassment aimed at instilling fear in journalists and discouraging them from reporting freely. It goes against the ethical principles of journalism and press freedom,” Muhammad stated.

The detention has sparked concerns over media rights and press freedom in Nigeria, with journalists and advocacy groups calling for an end to what they see as undue interference in the work of the media. -‘Blueprint’
