KANO: An early morning fire has engulfed the Kwalema recycling market in the Dakata community of Nassarawa Local Government Area, Kano State, destroying goods worth millions of naira.
The fire, which broke out in the densely packed market along Zango Road, near Dominion/Mobil filling station and the WAEC office, sent thick smoke billowing into the sky as traders and residents watched helplessly.
Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, confirmed the incident, stating that firefighters were deployed to the scene immediately and were working tirelessly to contain the blaze.
“We received a distress call about the fire outbreak, and our men responded swiftly. Efforts are ongoing to put out the fire and prevent further damage,” he said.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but preliminary reports suggest it may have been triggered by an electrical fault or improperly discarded flammable materials. Officials say a full investigation will be conducted once the flames are extinguished.
Many traders, some in tears, lamented their losses, with one of them, Malam Yusuf, saying, “I have lost everything. My entire shop was filled with goods, and now it’s all gone. This is a huge setback for us.”
Residents called for better fire safety measures in Kano markets, noting that repeated fire incidents continue to cripple small businesses.
As emergency responders battle the flames, authorities are urging people to avoid the area to allow for an effective response.
