DELTA: Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has sparked controversy by blaming the presence of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for the Super Eagles’ unexpected 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in their World Cup qualifier in Uyo.
The Super Eagles had been leading until the 90th minute when Zimbabwe equalized, dashing Nigeria’s hopes of securing a crucial victory at home. Obi, who attended the match, was seen engaging with fans and giving an impromptu interview at the stadium.
Omokri took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his displeasure, arguing that Obi’s presence was a distraction.
According to him, “Peter Obi should not have gone to the stadium. He made an effort to make his presence known and felt. This match was about Nigeria, not him,” he said.
He further claimed that politicians should avoid football events unless they hold official government positions.
He said, “Politics and football do not mix. The players needed to stay focused. Politicians drain morale. If he were the President, it would be different, but he embodies division,” Omokri stated.
Drawing parallels with Nigeria’s AFCON final loss to Ivory Coast, Omokri suggested that Obi’s presence could have had a negative impact. “At least he should have learned from what happened at AFCON,” he added.
Omokri’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions, with some Nigerians dismissing his claims as politically motivated while others questioned whether high-profile political figures should attend national sporting events.
