ANAMBRA: The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election in Anambra State has descended into chaos, following the dramatic withdrawal of one of its top contenders, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, who pulled out over alleged violence and manipulation of the delegate process.
The primaries, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre in Awka, failed to commence even by 7:14 p.m., deepening anxiety among party stakeholders and aspirants.
Okonkwo, a respected academic and businessman, cited concerns over violent disruptions and the lack of transparency in the accreditation process as reasons for his exit. His withdrawal followed reports that some delegates were attacked at a hotel in Awka, allegedly by thugs loyal to a rival aspirant.
In a formal statement issued in Awka, Okonkwo said the conditions surrounding the primaries no longer aligned with his political values.
“This decision to withdraw from the race was a difficult but necessary one because of developments that are inconsistent with my principles and values,” he said. “The project is not worth risking the lives of my supporters, among other reasons.”
Okonkwo added that while he may be stepping back from the race, his commitment to Anambra State’s development remains firm.
“My passion for public service remains strong. I will continue to contribute to the socio-economic and political development of Anambra State and Nigeria. I will also continue to support President Bola Tinubu’s development agenda for the country,” he stated.
So far, three aspirants—Okonkwo, Sir Paul Chukwuma, and Hon. Chuma Umeoji—have exited the race. Chukwuma openly criticized the APC’s internal structure, blaming the dominance of what he described as “unprogressive elements” for his decision to withdraw and defect from the party.
The primaries have also been plagued by inconsistencies surrounding the delegates list, which remains a source of dispute among the remaining contenders—Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Mr. Valentine Ozigbo, Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo, and Hon. Edozie Madu.
Political observers fear the unfolding crisis could fracture the party’s base in Anambra, with implications for the APC’s chances in the upcoming governorship election.
