The arrest of protesting Itsekiri youths in Ubeji, Warri, by military personnel has been condemned by Comrade Alero Naomi Tenumah, former President of the National Association of Itsekiri Graduates (NAIG).
In a chat with newsmen on Tuesday in Warri, she described the development as reflective of the broader insecurity experienced by the Itsekiri people since the last Warri crisis.
Tenumah criticized the alleged use of tear gas and ammunition to disperse youths who were reportedly engaged in a peaceful demonstration at the Nigerian Gas Company Limited.
She questioned the necessity of such measures, emphasizing the importance of protecting citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly.
Tenumah also commented on the recent proposal by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding unit and ward delineation in Warri Federal Constituency.
She expressed concerns that the plan could potentially marginalize the Itsekiri people, suggesting that it may have long-term implications for their political representation and territorial identity.
Additionally, she raised issues regarding the pipeline surveillance contract awarded to Tantita Security Services Limited, alleging that its implementation has led to increased tension and fear in some Itsekiri communities.
She called on the Federal Government to ensure that security operations do not infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens.
