INEC Dismisses Rumours of Final Decision on Warri Ward Delineation, Urges Calm Amid Rising Tensions

By Peter Onyekachukeu, Warri

DELTA: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dispelled growing speculation surrounding the delineation of electoral wards in Warri Federal Constituency, stating that no final decision has been made and urging all stakeholders to remain calm.

This clarification comes amid increasing tension and public outcry, particularly from groups who fear that the proposed exercise may alter the existing political balance in Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South-West Local Government Areas.

The controversy stems from a Supreme Court judgment delivered on December 2, 2022, which mandated the commission to review and carry out a delineation exercise in the area.

In a statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, INEC confirmed that consultations with stakeholders began in February 2023 and continued until July 2024. The commission also carried out extensive fieldwork across communities in the affected LGAs, resulting in the production of a draft report.

“Contrary to the speculations making the rounds, the Commission is yet to take a final decision on the delineation of wards in the Warri Federal Constituency,” Olumekun stated, noting that the most recent stakeholder engagement took place on April 4, 2025, where parties were presented with the draft report and encouraged to raise concerns.

INEC stressed that its objective is to reach a mutually agreeable solution, guided by fairness and in full compliance with the Supreme Court directive.

“We urge representatives of the various stakeholders to submit their observations on the draft report, which will serve as the basis for further engagement,” the commission added.

Olumekun also appealed for restraint among all parties, warning against any actions that could compromise peace and security in the region. “The Commission will continue to operate based on fairness, equity, the rule of law and in full consultation with all stakeholders,” he affirmed.

The commission’s response comes in the wake of reported attacks and rising political rhetoric, including accusations from the Itsekiri Leaders of Thought, who allege that the delineation is part of a larger scheme to extend Ijaw territorial influence in Warri.

As tension simmers, INEC’s call for dialogue over confrontation seeks to redirect focus to constitutional responsibility and inclusive consultation, even as the communities await the next steps in the controversial delineation process.
