The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced the relocation of its 2025 Annual General Conference from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Enugu. The decision follows the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the appointment of a sole administrator to govern the state.
In a statement released late Thursday and jointly signed by NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN), General Secretary Mobolaji Ojibara, and Chairman of the Annual General Conference Planning Committee (AGCPC), Emeka Obegolu (SAN), the association explained that the change was necessary due to the current political climate in Rivers State.
The NBA noted that Port Harcourt had generated considerable enthusiasm as the original host city, as reflected in high registration numbers. However, the imposition of emergency rule and the appointment of a retired military officer as sole administrator—whose leadership style has been described as autocratic—prompted serious concerns.
“Indeed, prior to the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, registration figures had soared, reflecting the excitement and eagerness of members to attend,” the statement read.
“However, the unfortunate turn of events in Rivers State has understandably stalled the momentum and affected advanced preparations for the conference.”
The NBA further expressed concern over the sole administrator’s disregard for constitutional governance, judicial authority, and the rule of law, noting that despite being in civilian attire, his governing style mirrors that of military rule.
“These developments have significantly undermined democratic institutions and processes, prompting growing calls from our members for a change of venue,” the statement added.
The association confirmed that Enugu will now serve as the new host city for the 2025 Annual General Conference.
