The National Assembly has shifted its resumption date for plenary sessions by one week, moving the official return of lawmakers from April 29 to May 6, 2025.
The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, announced the extension in a statement on Monday, attributing the delay to activities surrounding the annual Workers’ Day celebration and other constituency obligations of federal lawmakers.
“I am directed to inform Distinguished Senators, Honourable Members, and the general public that the two Houses of the National Assembly have extended the date for the resumption of plenary sessions from Tuesday, 29th April 2025, to Tuesday, 6th May 2025,” the statement read.
Ogunlana further explained that the adjustment would give room for lawmakers to actively participate in Workers’ Day commemorations and attend to pressing matters within their respective constituencies.
A legislative aide who spoke to Daily Trust under anonymity said, “Many of the lawmakers are expected at local events for May Day and also need time to engage with their constituents before returning to the National Assembly. It’s a practical move.”
While the extension may disrupt some pending legislative matters, analysts believe it could strengthen constituency relations and allow lawmakers to reconnect with grassroots concerns.
The National Assembly leadership urged the public to take note of the new date and apologized for any inconvenience the delay may cause.
