Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has described the passing of Pope Francis as a great loss to humanity, praising the late pontiff as a unifying voice and moral compass in a fractured world.
Reacting to the death of the revered Catholic leader, who passed on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, Governor Oborevwori said the Pope’s humility, peace-building efforts, and relentless advocacy for the poor would continue to inspire generations.
“The passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, is a monumental loss not only to the Catholic Church but to humanity,” the governor said in a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, in Asaba.
He noted that Pope Francis was more than the head of the Roman Catholic Church; he was a global voice of conscience whose life was devoted to justice, equity, and the upliftment of the vulnerable.
“His teachings, humility, and relentless pursuit of peace and unity will remain a guiding light to many,” Oborevwori stated. “On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I extend heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community, the Vatican, and all those who found hope and faith in the Pope’s leadership.”
The Governor also commended Pope Francis’ bold approach to reforming the Catholic Church, his advocacy for climate action, and his dedication to interfaith dialogue and global peace.
He urged Nigerian Catholics and faithful across the world to uphold the values of compassion, love, and tolerance that Pope Francis championed during his papacy.
“The world mourns a man who lived for others, who preached not just with words but by example. We celebrate a life well-lived and pray for the repose of his soul,” he added.
