VATICAN CITY — The Vatican announced Tuesday that Pope Francis’s funeral will be held on Saturday, drawing an expected wave of mourners and world leaders.
The Argentine pontiff, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88 following a stroke, had recently returned home after spending five weeks in the hospital battling double pneumonia.
The funeral service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. (0800 GMT) in St. Peter’s Square, in front of the iconic basilica. Dignitaries including U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have confirmed their attendance to pay tribute to the late Catholic leader.
