Delta Power Shift: Oborevwori Set to Rejig Cabinet as Okowa Signals Exit from PDP

DELTA:Amid rising political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State is reportedly set to dissolve his cabinet in preparation for a sweeping political shift following his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

A credible source who attended a closed-door meeting at the Government House in Asaba confirmed that the governor broke the news to a select gathering of 25 local government chairmen, members of the Delta State House of Assembly, and senior PDP stakeholders. The insider, who requested anonymity, disclosed that the move is strategic, with plans already underway to reconstitute the state cabinet to reflect a power-sharing formula between the PDP and APC.

“In a matter of days, the governor will dissolve his cabinet to accommodate members of the APC. The arrangement is that the new cabinet will be shared in a 60 to 40 ratio, with PDP retaining 60 percent and APC taking the remaining 40 percent,” the source revealed.

According to him, the same formula would apply to the new political structure of the state chapter of the ruling party to reflect the emerging alliance. “More plans will unfold soon. What we are seeing is just the beginning of a broader collaboration,” he added.

Meanwhile, former governor of Delta State and Oborevwori’s political mentor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, appears to be treading a similar path. Okowa, who was the PDP vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has hinted at his likely exit from the party as well.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, the former governor was seen addressing his constituents in Ika dialect with visible emotion, assuring them that the political decisions being taken were in their collective interest.

“Be assured that we will not go in the wrong direction,” Okowa said. “We will take the best direction, the best path for our people.”

Observers believe that the defections could redefine the political landscape of Delta State, which has remained a PDP stronghold since 1999. As tensions rise and alignments shift, all eyes are now on the unfolding drama in Delta ahead of 2027.
