Liverpool crowned a magnificent Premier League campaign with a dazzling 5-1 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur at a rapturous Anfield on Sunday, securing their record-equaling 20th English top-flight title.
Under Arne Slot’s leadership, Liverpool overcame an early setback to dominate proceedings, as more than 60,000 supporters created an electrifying atmosphere. With this victory, Liverpool pulled level with arch-rivals Manchester United as the most decorated club in English top-flight history.
The hosts surged forward from the first whistle following a stirring rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in the warm spring sunshine. Mohamed Salah tested Tottenham early, and Cody Gakpo came close with an audacious overhead effort. However, it was Tottenham who briefly silenced Anfield when Dominic Solanke rose to head in a James Maddison corner in the 12th minute.
Liverpool’s response was swift. Just four minutes later, Luis Diaz tucked home Dominik Szoboszlai’s low cross from close range. Though initially flagged offside, VAR intervened to confirm the goal, reigniting the home crowd.
From there, Liverpool seized complete control. Alexis Mac Allister unleashed a thunderous drive from the edge of the box in the 24th minute to give Liverpool the lead. Gakpo added a third before halftime, punishing Tottenham’s defensive frailties with a clinical finish into the bottom corner.
Tottenham, heavily rotated by manager Ange Postecoglou ahead of their upcoming Europa League semifinal, were overwhelmed and found themselves with a daunting task.
Anfield, which had been denied the chance to celebrate Liverpool’s 2020 title win in person due to Covid-19 restrictions, was determined to savor every moment. The supporters sang through an expansive repertoire as the second half unfolded.
The moment the Kop had been waiting for came when Salah, Liverpool’s talisman, struck a fourth, cutting inside and firing low into the corner after being set up by Szoboszlai. In a moment of pure joy, Salah grabbed a fan’s phone and snapped a selfie in front of the Kop, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
Liverpool’s dominance was sealed when Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie inadvertently turned the ball into his own net with around 20 minutes remaining, making it 5-1.
As the clock ticked into added time, Anfield once again roared out its famous anthem. Scarves were waved aloft as the final whistle sounded, marking the start of jubilant celebrations for a title triumph that will live long in the memory
