Putin Steps In: Russia Offers Nigeria Full Military Backing in Fight Against Boko Haram and ISWAP

In a bold move signaling deepening military ties, the Russian Federation has pledged comprehensive support to Nigeria in its ongoing battle against terrorism.
The offer was presented by Lieutenant General Andrei Averianov—special envoy of President Vladimir Putin—during a high-level meeting with Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, April 28.
The proposed assistance includes advanced weaponry, tactical training, intelligence sharing, and deployment of military expertise, with the aim of strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to combat insurgent threats posed by Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other extremist groups.
Describing Nigeria as a “major regional power and a crucial player in the global war on terror,” Averianov reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to collaborate more closely, highlighting shared security challenges faced by both nations. “We are facing similar threats, and Russia stands ready to assist Nigeria as a key partner in counterterrorism,” he said.
According to a statement issued by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Media Operations, the visit was described as “historic,” emphasizing the evolving nature of global threats, from traditional warfare to asymmetric dangers like Al-Qaeda and Boko Haram.
General Musa welcomed the Russian delegation on behalf of President Bola Tinubu and expressed optimism about the renewed partnership. He called for broader cooperation in the areas of special operations training, logistics support, equipment maintenance, and intelligence sharing, pointing out the urgent need to restore numerous unserviceable Russian-made platforms currently in Nigeria’s arsenal.
Highlighting the practical needs of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, General Musa requested deployment of Russian technical experts for on-site repairs and the provision of critical spare parts. In response, Averianov assured that Russia would not only supply the parts but also send a team of experts to provide on-ground technical support.
Russia also pledged to bolster the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force with specialized equipment suited for counterterrorism operations and amphibious missions. Additionally, the two sides discussed the exchange of instructors and students for military education and training, as part of long-term strategic cooperation.
With terrorist activity still rampant in Nigeria’s North-East and other regions, the proposed defense alliance comes at a pivotal time. By drawing from Russia’s operational experience—especially in the Sahel and against 39 adversarial forces worldwide—Nigeria hopes to enhance its fight against extremism and restore security for its citizens.
The meeting concluded with mutual commitments to deepen military collaboration and maintain open channels for further technical, strategic, and operational engagement.
