Bauchi Rep Backs Youth in Rice Farming with Inputs, Tractor to Boost Local Agriculture

By Peter Onyekachukwu, Bauchi

BAUCHI: In a determined effort to tackle youth unemployment and strengthen food production, the member representing Darazo-Ganjuwa Federal Constituency in Bauchi State, Hon. Mansur Manu Soro, has empowered 125 young farmers with essential farming inputs and a tractor under a programme designed to create “young millionaires” through mechanised agriculture.

At the launch of the empowerment over the weekend in Darazo, the lawmaker unveiled the “MMS Young Millionaires in Agriculture” scheme, aimed at equipping selected beneficiaries with tools to cultivate at least one hectare of rice each this farming season.

“Each beneficiary received four bags of NPK fertilizer (15-15), improved Faro-69 rice seeds, pesticides, herbicides, a spraying machine, and N20,000 for land preparation,” Soro explained, noting that the initiative is expected to yield a minimum of 40 bags of paddy rice per participant—projected to be worth over N2 million.

He said the initiative is a strategic component of the Darazo-Ganjuwa Farm Mechanisation Support Initiative, structured in phases to ensure sustainability and accountability. “The second phase will follow after we assess the performance of the first batch through our farm extension officers,” he added.

To further support the mechanisation of agriculture in the constituency, the lawmaker also donated a Massey Ferguson 375 tractor. “This is in addition to the same brand of tractor we facilitated in 2020 after registering the local farmers’ association with relevant government bodies,” he said.

Hon. Soro emphasised that agriculture remains at the heart of his constituency’s economic development strategy. “By investing in our youth and providing the tools for commercial farming, we are not just fighting poverty—we are creating a new generation of agripreneurs who will feed the nation and drive rural prosperity.”

The intervention comes as Nigeria continues to push for greater food security through local production amid rising inflation and insecurity in major food-producing areas.
