Nottingham Forest and Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is in an induced coma after surgery for a ruptured intestine.
The 27-year-old collided with the post in the final minutes of Sunday’s 2–2 draw with Leicester. He underwent emergency surgery on Monday, with a second procedure expected Wednesday.
Forest confirmed he is “recovering well” but remains hospitalized.
The incident occurred while Awoniyi chased a cross from Anthony Elanga, who was offside—raising fresh concerns about delayed flag protocols under VAR rules.
Club owner Evangelos Marinakis has demanded answers and is monitoring Awoniyi’s condition closely.
Forest called the injury “a powerful reminder” of football’s physical toll, stressing that player safety must always come first.
