Police Deny Assault on Ghanaian-German Man in Delta, Say Viral Video Was Misleading

By Peter Onyekachukwu

The Delta State Police Command has dismissed a viral video alleging an assault on a Ghanaian-German national by its officers during a routine stop-and-search operation, describing the claim as “false and misleading.”

The video, which surfaced on social media on May 8, 2025, was recorded by a Nigerian woman who claimed to be the wife of the foreign national. In the clip, she accused officers of harassment and assault. However, the police have now refuted the allegations, insisting the officers remained professional and civil throughout the encounter.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, the incident occurred along the Agbor-Benin Expressway when officers stopped a commercial Sienna vehicle with seven occupants during a routine check.

“During the search, the woman became confrontational, hurling insults and making provocative remarks at the officers,” Edafe stated. “Despite her aggression, the officers maintained a calm and professional demeanor. At no point did they assault anyone.”

He noted that the woman’s repeated calls to the Facebook and social media community during the incident suggested she was more interested in creating viral content than seeking justice.

“The narrative in the video was clearly orchestrated to mislead the public and malign the image of the police,” Edafe said, adding that the leadership of the Command under Commissioner of Police CP Olufemi Abaniwonda does not tolerate misconduct or brutality.

He emphasized that stop-and-search operations remain a critical part of policing in Delta State, often leading to the recovery of weapons and other dangerous items. “We urge the public to cooperate with officers during such duties. These checks are for everyone’s safety,” he said.

The command also encouraged members of the public to report any genuine cases of misconduct.

The Police assured the public of continued professionalism in its operations while urging citizens to refrain from spreading misinformation that could incite distrust or undermine security efforts.
