Health Stakeholders Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthening Healthcare System in Edo State

Stakeholders in the health sector have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Edo State’s healthcare system during a strategic health review session held this week in Benin City. The meeting, attended by government officials, health agencies, and development partners, focused on evaluating progress and setting actionable goals for improved health outcomes.

A top official speaking at the event described the review as “a time to reflect on past efforts, identify gaps, and plan concrete steps toward strengthening the health system in the state.” He emphasized that the session was crucial for laying the foundation for a more responsive and resilient healthcare infrastructure.

The official also reiterated the unwavering commitment of Governor Godwin Obaseki to building a better and more inclusive healthcare system that caters to the needs of all residents of Edo State.

Chairman of the House Committee on Health, Hon. Dr. Richard Edosa, highlighted some of the achievements recorded so far in the health sector. He outlined several ongoing initiatives aimed at improving service delivery, enhancing the quality of care, and ensuring greater access to medical services across the state.

Also present was Dr. Theodore Ehanire, representative of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), who expressed the agency’s readiness to support the state government in expanding access to affordable healthcare services. “We are fully prepared to work with all stakeholders to ensure vulnerable groups benefit from affordable and quality healthcare,” Dr. Ehanire stated.

Mr. Mohammed Okorie, Programme Manager for UNICEF’s Lagos Field Office, also contributed to the discussions. He emphasized the importance of collaboration, especially in addressing healthcare access challenges and ensuring sustainability of ongoing health programs in the state.

The meeting concluded with a renewed spirit of partnership among participants and a shared vision of delivering a healthier Edo State through accountability, coordination, and strategic investment in the health sector.
