Edo Police Officers Facing Trial Over Misconduct During Rescue Operation

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed that officers involved in the vandalism of a vehicle during a recent rescue operation in Benin City are currently undergoing disciplinary procedures.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, the incident occurred on May 20 during a security response operation in Okhuimwun community, Ovia Northeast Local Government Area. He explained that officers from the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), who were attacked by protesting youths while transiting through the area, were rescued by a reinforcement unit.

“While the command strongly condemns the attack on IRT personnel, it also considers the actions of some officers during the rescue operation as unprofessional,” Yamu stated.

A viral video captured members of the Edo State Command’s Quick Response Team vandalizing a vehicle at the scene. Yamu confirmed that those involved have been identified, arrested, and are currently facing internal disciplinary trials in line with police regulations.

The Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and public accountability within the force.
