As residents of the Federal Capital Territory prepare for the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the FCT Police Command has announced the deployment of enhanced security measures to guarantee a peaceful festive season. The measures also cover the much-anticipated IGP’s Honours and Award Night, as well as the June 12 Democracy Day celebration.
FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Adewale Saka Ajao, disclosed this on Monday during a strategic security briefing with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Team Heads at the Command Headquarters in Abuja.
“We’re taking a holistic security approach not just for the Sallah festivities, but also for major national events scheduled in the coming days,” CP Ajao told journalists after the meeting. “We want residents and visitors to feel safe and assured, whether they’re going to worship, leisure, or official events.”
Part of the measures include increased visibility policing, particularly at entry and exit points into the city. The police boss revealed that Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams will sweep all designated worship centres, parks, and other recreational locations before the celebrations commence.
He added that tactical units have been instructed to intensify intelligence-driven raids on black spots notorious for drug-related crimes and other vices, while ensuring that operations remain lawful and respectful of citizens’ rights.
CP Ajao issued a stern warning to officers against any form of misconduct, emphasizing that extortion, harassment, and illegal phone searches will not be tolerated.
“Bail remains free. Any officer caught demanding money for bail will face disciplinary action. No officer should be involved in civil matters, especially land disputes. We must not allow enforcement to be used as a cover for financial exploitation,” he stated.
He also emphasized professionalism in conduct and appearance. “Officers must be smart, disciplined, and camera-friendly. We’re the face of the Nigerian Police Force and must carry ourselves with honour.”
With high-profile guests, including senior police officers and dignitaries expected in the capital for the IGP’s award event, CP Ajao directed tight security around hotels, event venues, and official routes.
He further instructed DPOs to ensure accountability and strict supervision of all personnel under their jurisdiction. In addition, officers have been tasked with cracking down on vehicles carrying fake or illegally acquired diplomatic plates.
Residents are encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement and report any suspicious activities as security efforts are scaled up across the FCT.
As the festive season draws near, the FCT police assure Abuja residents of their commitment to maintaining law and order while urging the public to celebrate responsibly and peacefully.
