Emefiele Granted N2bn Bail Over Alleged Fraud

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja on Monday granted former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, bail in the sum of N2 billion after he pleaded not guilty to eight counts of fraud and property acquisition.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alleged that Emefiele conspired with a fugitive, Eric Ocheme, to unlawfully acquire a 753-unit housing estate in Abuja and mismanaged billions through proxy accounts.

Justice Yusuf Halilu, who presided over the case, ruled that Emefiele must produce two sureties with properties worth N2 billion in Abuja and submit his travel documents. Failure to meet these conditions by Wednesday will result in his remand.

The case resumes on July 11, 2025.
