Former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning on Sunday to the 11-member BRICS economic bloc, threatening to impose an additional 10% tariff on all countries affiliated with the group if they continue what he described as “anti-American policies.”
Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared:
“Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy.”
The BRICS group originally comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa has since expanded to include six more nations, positioning itself as an alternative global economic and political force to Western dominated institutions.
Trump’s comments follow recent BRICS summit discussions centered on de-dollarization, trade independence from the West, and strengthening South-South cooperation stances viewed by some in Washington as undermining U.S. economic interests.
The former president’s threat signals an escalation in rhetoric as he continues to campaign for a return to the White House in the 2024 elections. His administration had previously used tariffs as leverage in trade wars, most notably against China.
While Trump did not name specific countries beyond BRICS, the message appears directed at the group’s broader ambitions to reduce U.S. influence in global financial systems.
As of Monday morning, no official response had been issued by BRICS leadership or individual member states.
