NANS Urges ASUU to Shelve Planned Strike Over Salary Delay

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its planned strike over the delayed payment of June salaries.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, Felicia Akinbodunse, NANS National Vice President (Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs), urged ASUU to consider the implications of industrial action on the academic progress of students.

ASUU had on Monday directed its branches nationwide to down tools, citing the “No Pay, No Work” policy after members’ June 2025 salaries were delayed beyond the agreed grace period. Chapters at the University of Jos and University of Abuja have already commenced strike actions in compliance with the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) resolution.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, confirmed the development, emphasizing that the directive was a standing policy meant to deter salary delays by the government.

However, Akinbodunse urged ASUU to pursue dialogue with the federal government instead of disrupting the academic calendar. She warned that another strike would reverse the gains made in recent years, where students had enjoyed relative academic stability under the current administration.

“Students and their families cannot bear another round of disruptions, especially in these tough economic times,” she said. “We urge ASUU to reconsider, and we also call on the federal government to prioritize the timely payment of salaries and ensure a lasting solution to this recurring issue.”

NANS reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for peaceful engagement between university unions and the government, calling for both parties to act in the best interest of Nigerian students.
