The Acting National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Iliya Damagum, has said the resignation of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, did not come as a surprise, describing it as a familiar political pattern and expressing confidence that Atiku would return.
Damagum made the remarks on Friday at the Government House in Bauchi while responding to questions from journalists on Atiku’s exit and that of other prominent PDP members.
“Well, it is expected because this is not the first time, and I don’t think it will be the last time. We still expect him any moment from now,” Damagum said.
His comments reflect a wait-and-see posture by the PDP as the party grapples with the fallout of Atiku’s latest move.
The former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, resigned from the party on Wednesday in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State. In the letter, he cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for his decision.
Atiku also expressed deep disappointment over the current direction of the party, which he said has strayed from the founding vision and principles that once united its members.
