The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded ten articulated trucks for violating the state’s restriction order on the Third Mainland Bridge, sparking a clampdown aimed at preserving road safety and public infrastructure.
The enforcement operation, which took place on Sunday, targeted trucks exceeding nine tonnes that are officially barred from using the bridge. The action comes as part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s broader efforts to ensure compliance with traffic laws and avert avoidable disasters on critical structures.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, who confirmed the enforcement, said the crackdown followed a period of stakeholder engagement, public awareness, and advisory notices.
“The Third Mainland Bridge is categorically excluded from the list of permissible routes for some articulated vehicles. This restriction is clearly enshrined in the law, and non-compliance will be met with decisive sanctions,” Giwa stated.
He expressed concern that despite repeated warnings, some operators continue to defy the ban, endangering lives and the structural integrity of a bridge that recently underwent major rehabilitation.
He added, “The deployment of technologically advanced monitoring tools is a critical component of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s broader strategy to entrench road safety and prevent structural fatigue.”
Giwa clarified that the enforcement is not punitive but a lawful intervention to protect the public good and ensure the longevity of vital infrastructure.
He advised truck operators and logistics stakeholders to comply with traffic rules and stick to approved routes, warning that “the period of indulgence is over,” and violators would face full legal sanctions.
