NUJ Delta suspends secretary Sorokwu indefinitely over financial misconduct, impropriety

By Peter Onyekachukwu

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has suspended its State Secretary, Comrade Victor Sorokwu, indefinitely after a vote of no confidence was passed on him during its Congress on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

Comrade Dominic Adewole, former Chairman of Asaba Correspondents’ Chapel, who moved the motion, said the action was necessary because of allegations of gross misconduct, financial impropriety, high-handedness and unethical conduct against Sorokwu. He was seconded by Comrade Akpokona Omafuaire, former Chairman of Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, who insisted that Sorokwu had debased the Union’s professional status and called for his impeachment.

The motion for indefinite suspension was later amended by Comrade Prince Pere Botu, Chairman of DBS Asaba Chapel, and seconded by Comrade Fred Oduh, Editor of Gallant Reporters Online Publication. The Congress overwhelmingly supported the decision, saying the embattled Secretary had been tolerated for too long despite repeated allegations.

The Press Centre vendor, Mr. Benedict Obiokolie, in a petition to the State Working Committee through the Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, accused Sorokwu of breaching a contract for the commercial management of the Secretariat. Obiokolie alleged that Sorokwu continued to collect and divert funds meant for the vendor without his knowledge or that of the Union.

It was also recalled that the NUJ National Secretariat had earlier set up a probe panel to investigate Sorokwu and the State Chairman. The panel recommended a six-month suspension for both officials, but the NEC reduced the penalty to a public apology to the petitioners and those affected by their actions.

Would you like me to also draft a follow-up analysis piece on how this suspension might affect the Delta NUJ’s internal unity and public image?
