DELTA: The Delta State House of Assembly has accused security agencies of frustrating efforts to enforce the state’s Anti-Open Grazing Law, which was enacted to address the growing menace of herders-farmers conflicts.Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the House Committee on Legislative Compliance, Arthur Akpowowo, expressed disappointment over the alleged actions of security agencies, particularly the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), which he described as undermining the enforcement of the law by local governments.Speaking to journalists in Asaba, Akpowowo said, “It is unacceptable that certain security agencies are questioning the enforcement efforts of local councils. “The Delta State Anti-Open Grazing Law was passed and signed to address critical issues, and its enforcement must not be obstructed by any agency. We will not be intimidated or deterred from ensuring full compliance.”He commended the proactive steps taken by some local government councils to implement the law and urged others to follow suit. He warned that any local government that fails to enforce the law in 2025 would face severe sanctions.“The grace period for compliance has long elapsed. We expect all 25 local government councils in the state to act decisively. This House will stand firm on this matter to protect the interests of Delta State and its people,” he added.Akpowowo also called on security agencies to support the implementation of the law, emphasizing that cooperation was necessary to address the challenges posed by open grazing.“The Anti-Open Grazing Law is a priority for the state, and we expect all stakeholders, including security agencies, to play their part in ensuring its success. This is not just about law enforcement but about protecting lives, property, and the livelihoods of our people,” he said. The Delta State House of Assembly has reiterated its commitment to ensuring full compliance with the law and safeguarding the interests of residents against the negative impacts of open grazing.
