Manchok Residents Cry for Help as Flood Ravages Kaduna Community

By Peter Onyekachukwu, Kafanchan

Residents of Manchok community in Moro’a Chiefdom, Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, are appealing for urgent government intervention after floods submerged homes and farmlands, destroying property and livelihoods.

Triggered by three days of heavy rainfall, the floods left families stranded, food crops and plantations washed away, and homes severely damaged.

One of the victims, Duniya Awuwu Sambo, recounted how the disaster left him helpless. Standing in front of his flooded house, he said: “The flood destroyed my property and kept my family awake all night draining water from the house.” He added that furniture, electronics, and other valuables were ruined.

For farmers, the disaster was even more devastating. Luka Ishaya lamented that his entire farm and plantations, his only means of survival, had been wiped out. “The incessant rains, instead of benefiting us, have brought devastation. It is really sad,” he said.

Community members also blamed poor infrastructure for the scale of the disaster. Resident Thomas Yatai attributed the flooding to blocked waterways, lack of proper drainage, and indiscriminate waste disposal by residents.

Youth leader Moses Mathew expressed frustration that the flooding could have been prevented if drainage systems were functional. He said local youths have begun self-help efforts by clearing blocked drains and creating temporary channels to redirect water while awaiting government support.

Although no lives were lost, the floods have left residents of Manchok reeling from losses and appealing to both the state and federal governments for relief materials and long-term measures to prevent future occurrences.
