ABUJA – The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has congratulated Maryamu Idris, the Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, on her appointment as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). This significant role will make her the country’s primary technical liaison within the influential oil cartel.
In an official statement on its X handle, NNPC highlighted Idris’s extensive experience in the energy sector. She previously led the Pricing and Valuation efforts within the Crude Oil Marketing Division and served as a Technical Advisor to Nigeria’s OPEC Delegation. Her background also includes a foundational role in Nigeria’s engagement with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and contributions to oil sector reforms.
Idris holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Abuja and a Master of Science in Energy Economics from the University of Dundee in Scotland.
In her new capacity, Idris will also become a member of OPEC’s Economic Commission Board (ECB), where she will contribute to key technical deliberations and policy recommendations. Her role is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s voice on crucial issues like production quotas, price stability, and sustainable energy policies amid volatile global oil dynamics.
NNPC believes her dual roles will be pivotal in shaping both national and international energy strategies. She will collaborate closely with the OPEC Governor and national stakeholders to ensure Nigeria’s energy interests are effectively represented and aligned with OPEC objectives.
