Delta LG Chairman Marks World Peace Day, Calls for Truth, Justice, Rule of Law

By Peter Onyekachukwu

The Executive Chairman of Warri-South Local Government Area, Comrade Agbateyiniro Isaac Weyinmi, has called on leaders and citizens to embrace truth, justice, and the rule of law as the foundation of lasting peace.

He made the call on Sunday, September 21, 2025, during the commemoration of World Peace Day held at the Unity Hall, Governor’s Office Annex, Warri. The event, themed “Act Now for a Peaceful World”, brought together government officials, security chiefs, community leaders, NGOs, civil society organizations, party stalwarts, and members of the press.

Weyinmi, in his address, warned that unresolved conflicts and wars have dire consequences globally, citing crises in parts of Nigeria’s North-East and North-West, as well as in Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, and Russia. He noted that wars often displace millions, particularly women and children, while also destroying livelihoods, infrastructure, and economies.

“Peace and sustainable development go hand in hand. When peace prevails, government can focus on investing in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Peaceful societies are more attractive to investors and opportunities,” the chairman said.

He commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the ongoing development projects in Warri and its environs, stressing that the relative peace in the area has created room for such progress. He urged residents and stakeholders to support the governor by fostering a conducive environment for investment and growth.

Quoting former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, he said: “Peace is not the absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means.” Weyinmi also cautioned leaders against inflammatory statements or actions that could fuel tension.

The chairman reminded participants of the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Martin Luther King Jr., and Norman Schwarzkopf, all of whom emphasized peace as a pathway to lasting victories and sustainable progress.

He reaffirmed his commitment and that of the state government to peacebuilding and development in Warri-South, urging all stakeholders to join hands in advancing Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Let all stakeholders in Warri-South and environs commit to engineering a peaceful environment. By this, we will enable the agenda of our governor and president to thrive,” he concluded.
