A police inspector in Kano, Aminu Ibrahim, has died after an alleged accidental discharge from his AK-47 rifle while on duty in the Hotoro area.
The incident occurred around 5:40 am on Saturday at the premises of Basnaj Global Resources Limited, Hotoro, where the officer was deployed.
Witnesses said the inspector accidentally shot himself in the stomach while squatting in a toilet, with the weapon hanging around his neck.
Police sources confirmed that the rifle, bearing registration number GT 4177, was found cocked and unsafe. Twenty-nine rounds of ammunition were recovered out of the 30 earlier issued to him.
Ibrahim was rushed to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.
His remains were later deposited at the hospital mortuary for an autopsy.
Kano Police Command spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the case is under investigation.
He assured that the outcome of the investigation would be made public.
The incident has thrown the Hotoro Division and the wider community into mourning.
