LAGOS, NIGERIA—Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu today personally inaugurated the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, a high-octane, all-electric powerboat racing event, marking a major milestone as the city becomes the first in Africa to host the prestigious E1 World Championship.
The Governor arrived at the Five Cowries Creek in Falomo, where he boarded a boat destined for the Lagos Motorboat Club to officially open the three-day spectacle, which runs from October 3rd to 5th.
The E1 Grand Prix is the world’s first all-electric powerboat series, using futuristic hydrofoil “RaceBird” vessels designed to promote cutting-edge marine technology and sustainability while creating zero emissions. Lagos now joins an exclusive list of global host cities, including Monaco, Venice, and Jeddah.
The event, which is expected to generate over $100 million in total revenue for the state, is not just a sporting contest. It is a fusion of innovation, culture, and high-stakes racing that aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s commitment to advancing the blue economy.
The championship is drawing immense international attention, featuring teams backed by global icons such as football legend Didier Drogba, Hollywood star Will Smith, and tennis champion Rafael Nadal. The Lagos waters will see nine international teams compete in the semi-finals, eliminator rounds, and the Grand Finale over the weekend.
Lagos State officials are confident the event will boost tourism, with between 10,000 and 15,000 spectators expected. The Grand Prix will not only showcase speed but also the creativity and resilience of Lagos, firmly placing the city on the global map as Africa’s premier aquatic and innovation hub.
