Police Dispute Court Order on Tinted Glass Permits, Demand Official Service

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has responded to a social media post by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong concerning a Federal High Court order on the enforcement of tinted glass permits, arguing the lawyer presented an incomplete picture of the ruling.

Effiong had shared an excerpt of a court order in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025, which directed the police to maintain the status quo in the ongoing case, effectively restraining them from taking further action on the tinted glass regulations pending the determination of the matter.

However, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, reacting via the official NPF X (formerly Twitter) handle, countered the post. Hundeyin confirmed the police had not been officially served but accused Effiong of “skewing” the information by omitting a key point.

Hundeyin highlighted Point 8 of the same order, which reads: “Meanwhile, Reliefs 1, 2 and 3 are hereby refused.”

The refused reliefs sought by the applicant (John Aikpokpo-Martins) included interim injunctions to:

  1. Restrain the police from implementing the new tinted glass permit policy set to commence on October 6, 2025.
  2. Restrain the police from stopping, harassing, arresting, or extorting motorists in purported enforcement of the policy.
  3. Restrain the police from using a specific account (Parkway Projects) to collect renewal fees.

While leading counsel in the matter, Kunle Edun, SAN, described the order to maintain the status quo as a “major step in upholding the rule of law,” the police’s reaction suggests that the refusal of the specific interim injunctions means the court did not grant the immediate halt to enforcement the applicants sought.
