ABUJA—Former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has issued a stark warning to former President Goodluck Jonathan, advising him against yielding to pressure to contest the 2027 presidential election. Oshiomhole argued that a political comeback would only tarnish the statesman legacy Jonathan earned by peacefully conceding defeat in 2015.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain insisted that those encouraging Jonathan to run are his “enemies” and that the APC would easily defeat him again.
“How can Jonathan be a threat? We defeated him before when PDP was truly PDP,” Oshiomhole declared. “If a man had PDP at its best, at its peak, and he was defeated, I think only his enemy will push him to go into election.”
Oshiomhole emphasized that Jonathan’s historic concession speech in 2015, with its famous line about no Nigerian blood being worth his ambition—is the former president’s most valuable legacy, one he should not risk.
“If I were able to advise him, I will say, Sir, maintain this status. You governed for eight years, you don’t have to govern for nine,” Oshiomhole stated. He praised Jonathan for managing to remain relevant and at peace even out of power.
The former APC National Chairman further argued that Jonathan’s political standing in his home region has diminished, making a realistic comeback impossible.
“We will defeat him flatly if he comes out because now the South-South is no longer PDP. So where is he going to start from?” he asked.
Jonathan, who ran on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was defeated by the late Muhammadu Buhari of the APC in the 2015 poll.
