NAIA Launches Unified Contactless Payment Card

ABUJA—The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, has been designated Nigeria’s first fully cashless airport, marking the nationwide debut of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria’s (FAAN) major initiative, “Operation Go Cashless.”

Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, FAAN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, officially launched the program on Sunday, calling the development “a pivotal moment in modernizing Nigeria’s aviation sector.” She stressed that it is more than a technological upgrade, representing a fundamental enhancement of the entire passenger experience.

Effective September 29, 20 25, the agency began eliminating physical cash transactions at all revenue collection points across its airports. This sweeping change covers access gates, car parks, and VIP lounges.

To facilitate the digital transition, FAAN simultaneously launched the FAAN Contactless Airport Card. This unified payment solution is designed to allow seamless, tap-and-go transactions throughout all FAAN-managed airports.

“For our passengers, this means faster, more secure transactions and an end to the delays of cash handling,” Kuku stated. “It is a direct response to your call for modern, efficient, and world-class service.”

The new card is loaded with features aimed at maximizing convenience and security, including a single wallet for multiple registered users, instant transaction notifications, and the ability to instantly block lost or stolen cards. Kuku emphasized that the technology is not only fast and convenient but also promotes enhanced hygiene.

The Managing Director highlighted the initiative’s role in improving the agency’s internal controls. The switch to cashless operation is expected to significantly strengthen financial accountability by ensuring all transactions are traceable and transparent, thereby aligning Nigeria’s aviation system with global standards.

“This initiative is a cornerstone of our strategy for enhanced accountability and sustainable revenue growth. It strengthens Nigeria’s position as a ready partner for international business,” Kuku explained.

She expressed optimism that the new digital system would soon record its first “billion naira collected digitally” and commended the Commercial and Business Development Directorate for driving the project. The FAAN CEO also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo for their unwavering support, concluding, “This is a new era for FAAN defined by technology, driven by efficiency, and and dedicated to serving you better.”
