Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has called on citizens to join hands in building a peaceful and prosperous nation following his victory in the 2025 presidential election.
In a national address shortly after being proclaimed winner by the Constitutional Council, the 92-year-old leader thanked Cameroonians for renewing their trust in his leadership while expressing sympathy for victims of post-election violence.
“At this point in time when the sovereign people have once again placed their trust in me for a new term of office, my first thoughts are with all those who have unnecessarily lost their lives, as well with their families, as a result of the post-election violence,” Biya said.
The president, who has ruled the Central African country since 1982, acknowledged the enormous responsibility placed on him and pledged to meet the expectations of citizens, especially women and young people.
“With the presidential election behind us, I sincerely hope that, together, we resolutely undertake to build a peaceful, united and prosperous Cameroon. We really owe this to our beloved and beautiful country,” he said.
Biya, who secured 53.66 percent of the votes according to official results, described the polls as a testament to Cameroon’s democratic process and lauded those who participated.
“As President of all Cameroonians, I would like to commend all those who took part in this electoral process that makes Cameroon a true democracy,” he stated.
He also extended gratitude to his supporters, saying, “I wish to particularly extend my sincere thanks to all the voters who chose me.”
The veteran leader’s message comes amid reports of protests and clashes in parts of the country following the announcement of results.
Observers say Biya’s appeal for calm and unity will be crucial in determining how the nation moves forward after one of its most contentious elections in decades.
