A violent clash broke out in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Sunday after soldiers reportedly opened fire on police officers returning from election duty, leaving several injured.
Witnesses said the confrontation occurred at a military checkpoint along Onitsha Road following an argument between the two security agencies.
One of the affected policemen, who spoke anonymously, said trouble started when the soldiers stopped their convoy for questioning.
“On our way back from the Anambra election, we had a misunderstanding with the Army personnel at a checkpoint. Before we knew it, they opened fire on us. One of us was shot in the chest while others sustained injuries,” he said.
The incident, according to sources, sparked tension and a riotous atmosphere as policemen called for reinforcement.
About 45,000 police personnel were deployed for the November 8, 2025, Anambra governorship election, which was won by the incumbent governor, Prof. Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Soludo polled 422,664 votes, defeating Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 99,445 votes. Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) came third with 37,753 votes, while John Nwosu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secured 8,208 votes.
The police and Nigerian Army authorities were yet to issue official statements on the incident at the time of filing this report.
