Residents of Abavo Kingdom in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State have called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to provide urgent assistance following a severe windstorm that left widespread destruction in several communities.
The storm, which struck on March 11, 2025, tore through communities including Ogbe-Idibon, Igbogili, Ekwueze, and Oyoko, destroying homes, public buildings, and key infrastructure.
Roofs were blown off, electric poles and solar-powered streetlights were damaged, and farmlands were left in ruins. While no lives were lost, several residents sustained injuries and required medical attention.
The Awu Elites Club, a prominent socio-cultural group in Abavo, has written to the governor, highlighting the urgent need for intervention. In a statement signed by its President, Prince Frank Moses Jegberume, and Secretary-General, Emeke Oseki, the group praised the governor for his developmental strides, particularly the construction of the Ogbe Isogban Road, but urged him to extend support to victims of the disaster.
“The destruction has left many families stranded, with their homes exposed to the elements and security risks. The fallen electric poles have led to prolonged power outages, and areas where streetlights were damaged are now vulnerable to criminal activities at night,” the statement read.
The group emphasized the financial burden placed on affected residents, many of whom cannot afford to repair their homes or replace lost property.
They urged the state government to provide relief materials and support for rebuilding efforts, stressing that the crisis has left a deep psychological and economic impact on the affected communities.
“As a community-driven initiative, we have stepped in to offer assistance, but the magnitude of the damage requires urgent government intervention. We appeal to His Excellency to extend relief and aid to our people during these trying times,” the statement added.
Residents of Abavo Kingdom now await the government’s response, hoping for swift action to restore normalcy in their communities.
